Seven months after our second daughter was born, I knew something wasn’t right with my body. No matter how much sleep I got, I was always feeling tired, exhausted, overwhelmed and easily irritable, but who wouldn’t? After all, having a new born can be incredibly demanding. However, what I didn’t expect was the severely dry and flaky skin, hair fall, brittle nails, frizzy dry hair, mood swings, brain fog, and stubborn weight that wasn’t coming off, in spite of healthy food choices and exercise. After months of dismissing my symptoms, I finally went to see my family doctor. Based on my symptoms and blood test results, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism also known as underachieve or low thyroid is an autoimmune disorder in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone for the body to function optimally. The thyroid glad which is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, is an essential organ for producing thyroid hormones, that regulate everything from heart rate, body temperature, digestion, and mood to name a few.
To finally identify what was wrong with me normally would bring about comfort, but for me it was a harsh reminder that I might be going down the same path as my mother. Five years prior to my diagnosis, my mother was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Six months after being diagnosed, she had a full thyroidectomy and was prescribed a form of synthetic hormone that she would take for the rest of her life. She was also told that her hyperthyroidism was very likely the reason she had so many miscarriages in the past. This as you could imagine made me even more nervous, because we were planning to have more children.
I was quickly prescribed my first supply of levothyroxine. Two years later, my hair was still falling out, my skin was still very dry and flaky, my memory wasn’t getting any better, and I still couldn’t lose the pregnancy weight. During this time my husband and I were also planning to grow our family, but we weren’t having much luck. Another year had past, and on my annual visit with my doctor, I expressed that I wasn’t feeling any better and my symptoms seem to be getting worse. I asked if there was anything I could do in addition to talking my medications, she looked at me and simply said NO. She reminded of how lucky I was compared to others who were on a a laundry list of medication. That for me was my “AHA” moment, from that moment forward, I was determined more then ever, to learn as much as I can about my condition..
I became obsessed with the topic! I began my research reading medical articles, studies, books, anything and everything pertaining to Hypothyroidism. For the very first time, I was able to fully understand my condition. I felt empowered knowing exactly what was wrong with me, and naturally, my next course of action was to find a way to fix it. And that is were my real journey began.
Right away I did a 30 day juice detox, cleaned out my fridge and pantry and stocked up on vegetables fruits, herbs and spices and started my healing journey. In addition to changing my lifestyle, I also did an internal inventory check of my emotional wellbeing. I had to learn how to be more mindful, intentional and present. Within one month, my thyroid results were back to normal and within range.
Things starting to change. I was feeling like myself again, I was no longer tired and exhausted all the time, my hair stopped falling out, my skin felt nourished, I could sleep better again and my clothes were finally fitting. I regained my health and life!
Healing any chronic condition can be a long lonely and exhausting journey and it was for me, but it doesn’t have to be the case for you. The reason I share my story is to show you that you’re not alone, you’re not crazy or lazy, and NO it’s not all in your head. My story is just one among thousands of mothers and young women who suffer with chronic and/or undiagnosed conditions. Since my ordeal, I’ve become a huge advocate for natural and holistic healing. It is now my passion and mission to use my platform, experience, along with the knowledge that I have gained over the years to encourage, motivate, and inspire others to make positive changes in their lives.
If you’re looking to turn your health around, lose weight, have more energy, sleep better, and live a healthier and happier life then you’ve come to the right place!
